Need some great last minute gift ideas that are locally sourced and will be well appreciated? Not to mention, many of these picks are pioneered by female entrepreneurs.
The Soap Kitchen is a local business in Old Town Pasadena founded by Dali Yu and has a wide variety of artificial fragrance-free soaps made from all natural ingredients and pure essential oils. Her packaging is always beautiful and you can make customizable gift baskets. This season she has created delicious bath bombs made with coconut and essential oils! An extremely useful gift item is the Soapscription where a different bar of soap is automatically sent every month. You can choose between 6 and 12 months. This year they are offering Soap Club For Men, a product line catered to what men would need like soaps, shaving soap, shampoo bars and lip balm.

They don’t make pencils like they used to and it’s nice to have something that feels good to write with for those of us who still like to actually write things down. Shorthand in Highland Park is the perfect place for pencils, journals and beautiful letterpress cards. Nothing is available for online ordering just yet but this is the kind of place that you will enjoy perusing their selection and it’s a great excuse to take in what York Blvd has to offer these days. They also have an impressive selection of colored pencils for those who are exploring the calming effects that coloring has to offer.

Remember the days of pencils and paper? This amazing letterpress and stationary shop in our neighborhood has beautiful things that make me pine for the old days without smartphones and keyboards and makes children appreciate the beautiful simplicity of… writing. @shopshorthand has a variety of very high quality colored pencils for doodling, coloring, drawing that feel oh so smooth on paper. Then you can stroll down the street and eat at @berrybowl, @recesseatery, @townla or @maximilianohp, all of which have lots of kid-friendly options. #littlelotuspediatrics #shorthand #ironcurtainpress #pencils #coloredpencil #stationery #writing #drawing #doodling #stationerylove #letterpress #shoplocal #highlandpark #90042

If you need a nice food item that is not so perishable and brags about how great we have it here in California, Santa Barbara Pistachio has a great variety of gift items. Their pistachios are organic and they just completed their 2016 harvest so everything is super fresh right now. There are tins, sampler packs and ridiculously good chocolate toffee pistachios. In the past, pistachios used to be mostly imported and were riddled with aflatoxins (i.e. mold) but now we don’t need to worry about that with this awesome local company.
Green Line Beauty is a trusted all-natural beauty supply store on Melrose in West Hollywood. The founder, Stacey, is meticulous about what she stocks and everything is pure, safe and natural. She has created a beauty care line with body wash, scrub, lotion and oil formulated to provide long-lasting hydration with antioxidant and moisturizing herbs like aloe, sencha and calendula. Her newest product is an eye serum that supports natural collagen and elastin production.

Red Bread is a one-of-a-kind organic bakery that you have delivered directly to your home. Based in Los Angeles, Rose is passionate about local organic freshly milled grains and sourdough fermentation. Her “pop tarts” are out of this world and she’s well known for her black rye bread. For that special friend who appreciates the artisanship that goes into her work, Red Bread offers a seasonal surprise box and various cookie, bread and sourdough subscriptions.

Treat the special home chef friend in your life to a Hedley and Bennett apron. These are handcrafted in Vernon and the company was started by a chef, Ellen Bennett, and the way she has grown her company in the last 4 years is extremely impressive. Aprons can be customizable and the variety of fabrics and colors they have is astounding and the quality is superb.

Epic Customization Wall

Poketo, a great shop whose mission is to instill art into daily life, was started by a husband-wife team and has had an online presence for a long time but they have 3 stores in LA: Arts District, Koreatown and Culver City. They make sure to curate products that are appealing to just about everyone at their shop and the kids’ products are great.

I understand that everyone’s into wine and it’s something you generically bring to everyone’s homes for parties. But what many people should learn to appreciate more is the medicinal and culinary properties of California olive oil. Brandon and I are huge olive oil fans (granted, we don’t drink alcohol) and practically inhale this stuff. Right now you can get first press, limited edition oils (aka Olio Nuevo) from several local companies like Bozzano or Calivirgin. Both companies also offer club memberships so they will ship different oils and vinegars to you on a quarterly basis. Another company that I love is Robbins Family Farm. All of these companies have a variety of oils to offer from mild to robust. The medicinal quality lies in the more robust oils – those polyphenols will make you cough but they sure are flavorful and interesting. Give the gift of health and prevention from Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and obesity with a good quality olive oil!

Last but not least, we are tooting our own horn on this one. Both Lotus Center and Little Lotus Pediatrics offer gift certificates of all denominations for your friends and family members, especially those who are afraid to jump the gun. There are so many people out there who tell us that their loved ones would really benefit from our work but might be nervous about an initial visit so here’s a great opportunity!
Let us know about any other great local gift ideas we should mention. Wishing you all the happiest of holidays!
